Hello! On Monday we were aimlessly walking around in the center of Stockholm when we realized that we could go to a museum. For free. That museum visit inspired me to write this post about 4 free things to try in Stockholm. In case you are traveling on a budget, these tips might be just for you. And if you want to know more about what we did on Monday, you can read about it here!
4 Free Things in Stockholm
Stockholm is a lovely city, but it’s also quite expensive. Eating out and accommodation is far from cheap. Check out these 4 free things to try in Stockholm and tell us – which is your favorite?
1. Visit a Museum for Free
Many of the museums in Stockholm have free entry, so you can enjoy a whole lot of culture and art for no money at all. Take the chance to learn about Swedish history and society, or appreciate art from near and far. Some of the museums that have no admission fee include the Army Museum, the Swedish History Museum, the Royal Armoury, the Medieval Museum, and Nationalmuseum. Check out the whole list or read more about the museums here >>
2. Take a Walk
Stockholm is a great city for walking, so this pleasant (and free!) activity really belongs on the list of 4 free things to enjoy in the capital. Actually, I believe that you could spend days just walking here, as the city is quite big. There is a lot of amazing architecture and nature everywhere! Some of the places you should definitely not miss are Gamla Stan (the Old Town), Djurgården, Södermalm, and Skeppsholmen. If you are on a tight budget, I’d recommend you to buy your meals from the supermarket (there are plenty), and enjoy your lunch in the form of a picnic in some nice park.
Do you fancy a free walking tour with a guide in either English or Spanish? Then you might be interested in this free (tip-based) walking tour!
3. Loppis (Flea Market)
Stockholm loves flea markets. There is usually no entrance fee, and this is your chance to strike a bargain or two. There really are a lot of flea markets all around town. Here’s a list (in Swedish) of all the flea markets that are coming up. This site has explored the second-hand scene more thoroughly and they have some very good tips about where to go to find the best gems.
4. Culture Nights & Street Festivals
Summer is approaching! And with summer we will be spoilt with culture nights, street festivals, fairs, and all sorts of events. Be sure not to miss out! I’m personally looking forward to the Stockholm Culture Night at the end of this month, but there is a risk that we will be busy then.
