Östergötland, a historical province in southeastern Sweden, offers a land of ancient cultivation, rich historical sites, and tranquil waterways. Östergötland has a population of about 470,000 people. This makes it one of Sweden’s more populous provinces. A significant concentration of residents lives in its major urban centers. They also reside in the surrounding agricultural areas. The population largely centers around its two largest cities.

Linköping: This is Östergötland’s largest city and the county seat. Linköping is a vibrant university city. It’s known for its technological advancements and the Saab aerospace industry. It boasts an impressive cathedral. Gamla Linköping, an open-air museum, is charming. The city blends historical sites with a modern, dynamic atmosphere. It’s a key regional hub for education and innovation.
Norrköping: Located northeast of Linköping, Norrköping is another major city. It has a strong industrial heritage. It was historically known as ”Sweden’s Manchester” for its textile industry. Today, it’s a diverse and modern city. It has a revitalized industrial landscape. A university campus is here. It also features a unique urban waterway, the Motala Ström. Motala: Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern, Motala is a significant town. It’s often called ”the heart of the Göta Canal.” It’s a popular destination for canal boat trips. It boasts a rich engineering history. Motala offers beautiful lakeside views and recreational opportunities.

Location

Östergötland is located in southeastern Sweden. It borders Småland to the south, Västergötland to the west, Närke and Södermanland to the north, and the Baltic Sea to the east. Its strategic position is between Sweden’s largest lakes, Vättern and Roxen. Its direct access to the Baltic Sea via its eastern coast has historically made it a vital region.

Geography

Östergötland’s geography features distinct fertile plains (Östgötaslätten). These are among Sweden’s richest agricultural areas. Smaller forests intersperse these plains. Ancient cultural landscapes are also present. The province is defined by a series of major lakes, forming part of the Göta Canal waterway system. These include Lake Vättern (Sweden’s second-largest lake) to the west. Lakes like Roxen, Boren, and Sommen are also here. Towards the east, Östergötland has a beautiful archipelago along the Baltic Sea coast. It features countless islands and a more rugged coastline. The terrain is generally flat in the central plains. The primary airport serving Östergötland is Linköping City Airport (LPI). It’s just outside Linköping. It offers domestic flights to Stockholm and seasonal charter flights. For broader international connections, Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO), located in neighboring Södermanland, is often used by low-cost airlines. All these airports provide taxis and local bus connections to their city centers, with good regional bus and train links to other parts of Östergötland.

By Sea

Östergötland has a coastline along the Baltic Sea. Norrköping Port is a significant cargo port. While it primarily handles freight, its historical role in maritime trade is substantial. There are currently no regular international passenger ferry services directly connecting Östergötland to other countries. However, the province is central to the Göta Canal. This canal is navigable by leisure boats. It offers scenic passenger cruises linking Lake Vättern to Lake Vänern and eventually to the Baltic Sea. This inland waterway provides a unique ”sea-like” experience.

By Land

Land travel is the most common and convenient way to reach and explore Östergötland. This is due to its excellent road and rail infrastructure.

By Car: Major national highways provide excellent access. The E4 highway, Sweden’s main north-south artery, runs directly through Östergötland. It connects Linköping and Norrköping to Stockholm in the north (about a 2-hour drive to Norrköping) and to Småland and Skåne in the south. The E22 also connects it eastward towards Kalmar. Driving offers great flexibility to explore the province’s diverse landscapes.
By Train: SJ (Swedish Railways) operates frequent and reliable long-distance train services to Östergötland. Linköping and Norrköping are major railway hubs. They have direct connections to Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and other key cities across Sweden. Train travel is efficient and offers a comfortable way to arrive. It often provides scenic views of the cultivated plains.
By Bus: Various long-distance bus companies offer comprehensive services to Östergötland. These connect major towns like Linköping, Norrköping, and Motala to Stockholm and other regions across Sweden. Local bus networks also provide good coverage within the province. This facilitates travel between smaller communities and attractions.
