The Guide to the Åland Islands: Sights
The Castle of Kastelholm
The Castle of Kastelholm is a place where you can learn more about the Åland Island. It’s a wonderful place for taking a walk and enjoying the scenery as well. Next to the castle you find the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum.
The Fortress of Bomarsund
Another historical spot on the Åland Islands is the Fortress of Bomarsund. While taking a stroll among the ruins, it does not require all that much to imagine the liveliness and the bustle of the village in the 19th century, when the fortress was being built by the Russians.
Visit the Ramsholmen nature reserve if you are looking for a moment of peace in beautiful nature. It’s a lovely place for a walk and barbecue as well. Strongly recommended!
Lemböte Chapel Ruin
Another piece of history of the islands can be found at the Lemböte chapel. Like so many other sights on the Åland Islands, the ruins are hidden in the lushness of nature. This is the perfect place for a picnic in the sun on a lazy summer’s day.
The ruins of the battery are not very well preserved but there is a watchtower that offers a breathtaking view over the southwestern coast of Åland.
