Lindos, Rhodes – A Tourist Madness

If you consider Rhodes City touristy, that is nothing in comparison with Lindos. This little town with its small white houses, narrow streets, sandy beaches, and a massive acropolis seems to be crowded with visitors.

Finding Somewhere to Park

If you arrive in Lindos before noon you might think that you will have options for parking. It might be tempting to get as close to the town as possible, but I would highly advise against driving down to the center of Lindos to find a spot. You will most likely either get stuck in the flock of tourists or fail to find parking and get stuck while trying to drive up the very steep hill again.

The best option is to find parking on the hill where everyone else parks and take the short walk down to Lindos.

Exploring the Maze of Narrow Streets

Once you enter Lindos you will notice that it is a maze of small streets, with shops and restaurants filling all available space. The town will also most likely be crowded by the many tourists arriving by buses from the hotels of the island.

We visited in October, which is low season for tourists. The streets were crowded either way. Luckily it is possible to find calmer streets a bit further into the maze. It was in the calmer areas that we found a small restaurant for a lunch break. If you want to be able to enjoy the streets, then we can really recommend finding somewhere in Lindos with fewer tourists.

Acropolis of Lindos

The Acropolis of Lindos raises above the small town. You have to do some climbing if you want to reach it and it might be a bit difficult in case you have a stroller or pram. After seeing fat old men and women riding the donkeys to the top, we are really unable to recommend any such convenience. It really was a sad sight.

The climb will be worth it though. The Acropolis is not only a historical site, but it also offers an amazing view of the Mediterranean coast of Lindos.

The Acropolis of Lindos is a natural citadel that was build in several stages by several different rulers. Here you have the heritage from the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans.

Beach of Lindos

After the Acropolis, we made our way down to the beach. Starting at Pallas Beach we were soon walking across the cliffs to the Beach of Lindos. The sandy beach was a big success for Little A. The beach had several restaurants and drinking holes, which made it quite convenient. Especially so as not so many were swimming and we could get a good spot for some drinks in the sunshine. That was how we enjoyed Lindos and we would like to believe that the walk back uphill to the car was not too long. One thing is for sure, it was not an easy walk.
