Sad Janka Kráľa | Sights in Bratislava

The oldest public park in Central Europe is located in Bratislava, and you can find it just across the Danube River in the Petržalka district. Sad Janka Kráľa, or Janko Kráľ Park, has its origins long before the Slovak Republic became an independent nation. The park was established as early as 1774-76, and it has since undergone many changes. The current shape of the park has remained the same since 1839, and it was one of the first parks in the world to be designed in the English landscape style. It is a popular place for meeting friends, and many people have picnics here.

The park is named after Janko Kráľ, a prominent figure in Slovak history. He was a contemporary of Ľudovít Štúr, the leader of the Slovak national revival in the 19th century. Janko Kráľ was a famous Romantic poet and a national activist, and he was one of the first writers to use the modern Slovak language standard after it was codified in 1843. Nearby, you can find one of the oldest theaters in the city, the Arena Theatre, as well as the modern Aupark shopping center. This beautiful structure was once the tower of the Franciscan Church in the Old Town of Bratislava. An earthquake damaged the upper part of the church tower in 1897. Instead of being demolished, the ornate Gothic top of the tower was carefully moved to its new spot in the center of the park. Today, this historic gazebo serves as the romantic centerpiece of the park, and it is a very popular spot for taking wedding photos.

Sad Janka Kráľa is located a short distance from the southern banks of the Danube River, and it stretches between the bridges Most SNP and Starý Most. The easiest way to find the park is to walk across the Danube at the Most SNP, which is also known as the UFO Bridge. Once you reach the other side of the river from the Old Town, you will find the park directly on your left. Its location is very central, and it is just a few minutes’ walk from the heart of the historic city. The park is a major landmark in the Petržalka district, so it is very easy to locate.
